Windchimes | March 8th, 2026

This month, with the help of Kristin Rucker, we continue to celebrate “spirituality’ in artwork! Today’s lessons focuses on Bessie Harvey, a self- taught artist from Tennessee who created wooden sculptures which represented the natural world, her life experiences, and her devotion to God. Our project is windchimes crafted from assorted sticks, air dry clay, beads, and twine (see reverse). Take a look at the material list, it is full of the same everyday materials that Bessie Harvey was fond of using in her works!

 

Materials: 

• Twine
• Scissors
• Pipe Cleaners
• Air Dry Clay
• Assorted Sticks
• Plastic Beads
• Shells

 

Project Steps:

• Select a stick, and then cut about 8 strings the length of your hand out of any color twine.
• Tie the twine along the stick, and then cut one longer string from one end of the stick to the other (this is the string that the windchime will hang from, so make sure to tie it tight!).
• Roll beads out of the air dry clay on the smaller wooden stick. Once dry, string onto the attached twine along with any plastic beads you want.
• Make sure the ends of the twine are tied tightly, and enjoy!

Este mes, con la ayuda de Kristin Rucker, ¡seguimos celebrando la espiritualidad en las obras de arte! La lección de hoy se centra en Bessie Harvey, una artista autodidacta de Tennessee que creó esculturas de madera que representaban el mundo natural, sus experiencias de vida y su devoción a Dios. Nuestro proyecto consiste en campanas de viento hechas con palitos variados, arcilla de secado al aire, cuentas y cordel (ver el reverso). ¡Consulta la lista de materiales; está llena de los mismos materiales cotidianos que a Bessie Harvey le encantaba usar en sus obras!

Materiales necesarios:

• Cordón
• Tijeras
• Limpiapipas
• Arcilla de secado al aire
• Palitos surtidos
• Cuentas de plástico

 

Pasos del proyecto:

• Elige un palo y corta unas 8 tiras del largo de tu mano de cordel de cualquier color.
• Ata el cordel al palo y luego corta una tira más larga de un extremo al otro (esta es la cuerda de la que colgará la campana de viento, ¡así que asegúrate de atarla bien!).
• Enrolla cuentas de arcilla seca al aire sobre el palo de madera más pequeño. Una vez seca, ensártalas en el cordel junto con las cuentas de plástico que quieras.
• ¡Asegúrate de que los extremos del cordel estén bien atados y a disfrutar!
