Swimmer Magnets | August 10, 2025
This month, we are making clay figures that could dive right out of one of the artworks in our current exhibition, Pool Party! We will be working with artist and ceramicist Kristin Rucker to combine clay, paint, and embellishments to create mixed media figures that you can turn into a magnet! Consider what your swimmer will look like: will they be relaxing like one of Derrick Adam’s figures? Or will they be swimming through the water like in Alex Katz’ Olympic Swimmer? Maybe they’re about to launch themselves into the pool as seen to the right in Isca Greenfield-Sanders’ work!
Materials Needed: Air Dry Clay Clay Tools Acrylic Paint Paint Brushes Glue (School glue, tacky glue, etc) Button Magnets Embellishments (beads, sequins, etc) Project Steps: 1. Using the air dry clay, begin to sculpt out the shape of the body of your swimmer. Use the clay tools to create textures and details. 2. Use acrylic paint to add details like swimwear, hair color, and facial features. 3. Add embellishments to your design by adding glue and pressing them into your clay. 4. When you are done designing and decorating your figure, glue and press a button magnet onto the back! 5. Allow your creation to dry overnight before displaying it.
