Pool Mosaic Coasters | September 14th, 2025
For the final Free Family Funday of our exhibition, Pool Party: The Pool in American Art, we are using mosai to decorate coasters, inspired by the tiled works of Martiza Caneca and the tiles found in pools! COPACABANA by Caneca is a mosaic of handcrafted tiles that are inspired by blue tiles found in swimming pools and the swirling, bending water. Artist Luca Molnar will help us with this project! As we decorate our coasters, consider what kind of patterns you will make with the tiles. You could create organic, flowing patterns or geometric, uniform patterns in your mosaic!
Materials Needed: Wooden coasters Colored tile pieces Tile adhesive sheets Grout Sponges Putty Knife Project Steps: 1. To begin, stick tile adheive sheets to your wooden coaster and peel off the protective backing to start decorating. 2. Use tiles to decorate your coaster as desired. Be sure to fill in any big gaps. Small spaces between your tiles are okay. 3. Once you have placed all of your tiles, turn it over and press down on the wooden side of the coaster to make sure all of your pieces are secure! 4. Using a putty knife, spread grout onto your tiles, filling in all the nooks and crannies. Use a wet sponge to wipe away excess grout so all that remains is the grout between the tiles. 5. Let your grout dry for 24 hours and use a wet cloth to wipe away the haze left on the tile. Your coaster is now ready!
