This month, we are creating artworks inspired by the landscapes created by Sally Michel during her time in Florida. She spent two consecutive winters in Maitland, Florida where she explored the Central Florida area, it’s landscape inspiring many works of art. The artworks she created during that time have a style that is puzzle-like, the forms reduced to very simplified shapes. Michel’s use of simplified forms, interlocking shapes, and reduction of colors marked her move toward her mature painting style. For this project, we will be creating our own puzzle-like landscapes with simplified shapes and a limited color palette.

Materials Needed:
Colored paper (construction paper or cardstock)
Scissors
Glue
Stencils

Project Steps:
1. Begin by choosing three to four different colored pieces of paper.
2. Create the background of your artwork by using different colors for the sky, ground, water, etc.
3. Use stencils or draw simplified versions of the objects in your landscape like the trees, clouds, and animals.
4. Cut and paste all of your elements together.
