John D. Gerdes: Sacred Algorithm showcases three paintings from the self-taught artist's Kaleidoscope series, part of the Mennello Museum of American Art's collection. Gerdes (b. 1913, Berman, Germany – d. 2001, Reva, VA) is best known for works that combine electrical diodes and painting techniques that mimic the texture of wood inlays. In the Kaleidoscope series, the artist explored perfect perspectives and pure geometries, where the creative vision of the kaleidoscope produced symmetrical, mirrored, and reflective shapes and patterns. These evoke highly symbolic traditions like Buddhist or Hindu Mandalas or Celtic knots. Gerdes' paintings create a space for reflection and thought within the gallery, encouraging viewers to contemplate their connections with technology, art, and spirituality.
