For our last Free Family Funday of Impression and Reality, we will be using palette knives to create bold strokes of paint, which could look similar to the brushstrokes seen in the Impressionist and Realist paintings in the exhibition. Using the palette knife will allow for the paint to have a 3D look, popping off of our canvas. This is a technique artists use called impasto. There are many different things we can create with the paint and palette knife. Try creating a lush landscape full of flowers or a portrait with beautiful clothing, using the palette knife to spread and scrape your paint!
There is no wrong way to do this, so get creative!
MATERIALSPalette Knife Acrylic Paint Canvas
PROJECT STEPS: Apply your acrylic paint to the canvas by doting it or drawing lines and shapes. Then spread that paint with your palette knife, not smoothing it completely for that 3D look. Try mixing colors, using different sides of your knife, or adding more paint as you go!
