Pastels | Free Family Funday | April 2023

This month, we will be using oil pastels to create our very own Impressionism and Realism inspired artworks! One main feature in Impressionism and Realism artworks is the non-traditional use of brushstrokes! Instead of making their art perfectly blended and realistic, the artists would use the thick, bold lines that their paintbrushes would make on their canvas. This was unlike much of the art of the past and was used to show the fleeting moment in time that the artist was capturing. We will be using oil pastels and creating a similar effect with this medium.

MATERIALS
Oil or Chalk Pastels
Pastel Paper or
thick drawing paper

PROJECT STEPS:
Take a look at the Impressionists and Realists use of color and brushstrokes.
Use your pastels to create a landscape, whether it's an imaginary place or somewhere you've been!
Make quick, short strokes on the paper to replicate brushstrokes.
