This year, complete your children’s summer program with a back to school art party at the Mennello Museum of American Art! With the museum all to themselves, kids will create to their heart’s content, just like the Outsider Artists on display now in An Irresistible Urge to Create! We have invited art educator Danny Powell for a fun filled day of activities for kids of all ages. All three (or more!) art projects will be ready to take home and show off to your family and on the first day of school.

More About the Art Projects
From painting to sculpture to cell phone “selfies,” artists have been making self-portraits for centuries. We’ll explore the fascinating work of Tony Garan and Eddie “Mr. Eddy” Mumma as inspiration for making self-portraits using everyday items and found objects.
Collage art can be as bold and unique as the artists who create it. The colorful “inlaid paintings” and collages of John Gerdes will help us leap into our own collages and mixed media art using magazine cutouts, origami paper, paint, and a variety of other materials.
The gorgeous imagined landscapes of Frank Ritchie evoke a sense of childlike wonder and the feeling of recalling a dream or memory. We’ll engage with and discuss Ritchie’s series of works before creating our own paintings of dreams, memories, and invented worlds.
