The Mennello Museum of American Art joins the #GivingTuesday Campaign

Orlando, FL — November 15, 2017

The Mennello Museum of American Art has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

Occurring this year on November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

The Mennello Museum is looking to our community to help in raising $2,500 to support educational art programs.

“#GivingTuesday is a fun global initiative that makes philanthropy and supporting things we care assessable for all.  Any amount counts and the take away is knowing your dollar or dollars provide direct support for individuals in our education programs – with tools, paint, brushes, canvas and more! Join #GivingTuesday and have an impact on how creative expression enriches lives.”

On Tuesday, November 28, 2017, the Mennello Museum will participate in the #GivingTuesday movement and offer donation-based admission during our operating hours. The amount you pay is up to you.

If you can’t make it to the museum on November 28, you can still help support our goal:

Donations to our #GivingTuesday campaign provide critical funding that brings quality and educational art programs to all in Central Florida by maintaining our museum’s broad accessibility and by reaching underserved populations from youth through adulthood. Your support helps us deliver valuable experiences to our community while creating a platform for creativity and learning.

92Y – a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back – conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. In 2016, the fifth year of #GivingTuesday, millions of people in 98 countries came together to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $177 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness.

“We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, founder of #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y. “As we embark on our sixth year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”

Those who are interested in joining the Mennello Museum’s #GivingTuesday initiative can visit www.mennellomuseum.org/giving-tuesday

About #GivingTuesday
#GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses, and communities in all 50 states and in countries around the world. This year, #GivingTuesday falls on November 28. #GivingTuesday harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. It inspires people to take collective action to improve their communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they believe in, and help create a better world. #GivingTuesday demonstrates how every act of generosity counts, and that they mean even more when we give together.

The Mennello Museum of American Art announces new Acquisition: Barbara Sorensen’s bronze Goddess, Siren I

Orlando, FL — October 27, 2017

The Mennello Museum of American Art is thrilled to announce the acquisition and unveiling of a new sculpture, Siren I by Barbara Sorensen, to the museum’s permanent collection. The artist herself has generously donated the empowering piece to grace the museum’s Marilyn L. Mennello Sculpture Garden.

Shannon Fitzgerald, Mennello Museum Executive Director, states: “We are delighted to add Siren I by Barbara Sorensen to the museum’s permanent collection and feature it so prominently in our re-invigorated Marilyn L. Mennello Sculpture Garden as the first woman artist in our outdoor collection.” She continues, “Barbara is an important artist in our region and has contributed so much to the cultural landscape of Central Florida; it is an honor to add this signature piece to our collection and share it with our community.  This is the third gift of art kindly donated by the artist whose solo exhibition and museum catalog in 2016 highlighted the first gifts.  I am delighted to unveil Barbara Sorensen’s work, and I sincerely thank her for sharing her wonderful artistry, and philanthropy.”

Sorensen’s exploration of the landscape as inspiration in her sculptural practice has been described by renowned art historian Elanor Heartney as “poetic images drawn from nature.” Sorensen’s Siren I is an extension of her ceramic chalices, twisted and formed, brought to staggering heights, transformed from sacred container to a realized figural form, a personal and methodological testimony to formation. For Heartney, the Goddesses specifically express “an ideal of life as a process of continual transformation…Blending the vessel and the female body, these embody s feminine spirit celebrating the generative processes of woman and artist.”

Please join Shannon Fitzgerald and Barbara Sorensen for the unveiling of Siren I on November 3 in the Marilyn L. Mennello Sculpture Garden.

Sculpture Unveiling: Siren I
Friday, November 3
5:30 – 7 p.m.

Join us for the unveiling of Siren I, a large-scale bronze sculpture by Orlando based artist and Winter Park resident Barbara Sorensen, from her “Goddess” series.

In celebration of Sorensen’s Siren, Better Than Sex – A Dessert Restaurant will present visitors with a curated beverage, “The Sirens Kiss”, and dessert, “Golden Goddess.”

Time and Thought: Art of the United States from the Cornell Fine Arts Museum

September 19, 2017 – January 7, 2018

In partnership with the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, the Mennello Museum is proud to present TIME AND THOUGHT: ART OF THE UNITED STATES FROM THE CORNELL FINE ARTS MUSEUM. This exhibition, on view at the Mennello Museum from September 19, 2017 through January 7, 2018, is drawn from the Permanent Collection of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida and organized by its Curator, Amy Galpin, Ph.D.

The history of art of the United States is rich and varied. Often seen in comparison to their European counterparts, American artists demonstrated ingenuity as they sought to display power and identity through portraiture, revel in the beauty of their natural surroundings through landscapes, and comment on conflicted and troubling histories in the spaces in between. The artists who are represented in this exhibition serve as key conduits for which time—and specifically American history—is marked.

Moreover, this presentation not only focuses on the technical skill of the artists included but how these individual works represented prevailing concepts and trends during the time in which they were created. The list of artists in this exhibition includes Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, John Kensett, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Grandma Moses, Jacob Lawrence, and Ed Ruscha.

In this exhibition, we are asked to think about time, place, and environment with a literary quote:

“Time and Thought were my surveyors, They laid their courses well.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Song of Nature”

The Mennello Museum presents Time and Thought: Art of the United States from the Cornell Fine Arts Museum

Orlando, FL — July 25, 2017

In partnership with the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, the Mennello Museum is proud to present TIME AND THOUGHT: ART OF THE UNITED STATES FROM THE CORNELL FINE ARTS MUSEUM. This exhibition, on view at the Mennello Museum from September 15, 2017 through January 7, 2018, is drawn from the Permanent Collection of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida and organized by its Curator, Amy Galpin, Ph.D.

Shannon Fitzgerald, Mennello Museum Executive Director, shares: “I am delighted to partner with our colleagues at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College and share part of their collection in a new context that provides enriching opportunities for our community. It is exciting to create a new inspiring narrative about American art – that resonates as timely and thoughtful and as important today as it was when created. The many trajectories of American art history tells us much about our nation and current thought in a particular moment in history and that, as it is in this exhibition, is often expressed best by artists.”

Amy Galpin, Ph.D. states: “Studying art of the United States can reveal new ideas about American culture, history, and identity. These works can celebrate the American spirit and testify to the talents of great American artist teachers like Robert Henri, William Merritt Chase, and John Sloan, but the pictures included in this exhibition can relate to serious issues and events such as class difference, Manifest Destiny, and the American Civil War.”  She continues, “I am thrilled to collaborate with my colleagues at the Mennello Museum of American Art on this project. Together our institutions, and others, can contribute to an enhanced art profile of the region. The Mennello Museum of American Art possesses many treasures of American art, and I am excited about the opportunity to re-think our collection through their dynamic space.”
